The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after Sanjeev Arora, the former member, won the Ludhiana Assembly seat. The by-election is scheduled for October 24, with the winner set to serve the remainder of the three-year term.
Rajinder Gupta, an industrialist-turned-politician, is the founder and chairman of Trident Limited, the flagship company of the multi-billion-dollar Trident Group. A Padma Shri awardee, Gupta has been instrumental in shaping Punjab’s industrial landscape.
He recently resigned as Vice Chairman of the Punjab Economic Policy and Planning Board and as Chairperson of the Kali Devi Temple Advisory Committee. Gupta has also served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, and has actively contributed to the management of several IT institutions across the country.
Despite his prominence, Gupta has maintained a low-profile and humble presence, earning respect across party lines. Over the years, he has worked alongside stalwarts such as the late Comrade Surjit Singh (General Secretary of CPI) and economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia, serving under the patronage of NDA, UPA-1, UPA-2 Central Governments, as well as various state governments, including Janata Party, Akali-BJP, Congress, and AAP in Punjab, and both Congress and BJP governments in Madhya Pradesh.
