Chandigarh, July 11, 2025: Undeterred by the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) sharp response to his previous remarks, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann once again questioned the intent and impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s frequent foreign tours, particularly to lesser-known nations.
Addressing media on Friday, Mann stated, “I criticized Modi yesterday, and I’m doing it again today. Someone has to speak the truth.” He reiterated his stand, urging the Prime Minister to prioritize domestic concerns over symbolic diplomacy.
“PM Modi is visiting countries no one has even heard of. What exactly are we gaining from these tours? Are we not allowed to question where our Prime Minister is going and why?” Mann asked, doubling down on his comments from earlier this week.
The Chief Minister also questioned the credibility of the international honors Modi has received from certain nations.
“Why is he getting the highest civilian awards from countries with a population smaller than a single Indian city? This isn’t about disrespect—it’s about accountability,” Mann asserted.
The remarks come just a day after the Ministry of External Affairs officially condemned similar statements, without directly naming Mann. In a statement to the media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the comments “irresponsible and regrettable.”
“We have seen some comments made by a high state authority about India’s relations with friendly countries from the Global South. These remarks are irresponsible and do not behove the position held. The Government of India disassociates itself from such unwarranted comments that undermine India’s diplomatic ties,” the MEA stated.
However, CM Mann remained defiant, asserting that citizens have the democratic right to question their leaders, including the Prime Minister’s international engagements.
“We are citizens of this country. We are not asking for secrets—we’re simply asking where the PM is going, why he’s going, and what benefit the nation receives,” Mann said, signaling no retreat from his position despite the Centre’s disapproval.
