Pilgrimage Turns Tragic: 10 dead, 25 injured as bus carrying pilgrims crashes with truck

Burdwan (West Bengal), August 15, 2025: A pilgrimage turned into tragedy on Friday morning in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district when a bus carrying pilgrims from Bihar met with a horrific accident. The incident occurred near Phagupur on National Highway-19, where the bus collided with a stationary truck, killing 10 people on the spot and injuring 25 others.
According to reports, the passengers — all residents of Bihar — were returning home after taking a holy dip in the Ganga. As the bus approached Phagupur early in the morning, the driver reportedly lost control, ramming straight into a truck parked on the roadside. Eyewitnesses said the impact was so severe that the front portion of the bus was completely mangled, trapping several passengers inside and causing chaos at the scene.
Local residents rushed to help and alerted the police. Rescue teams, with the assistance of locals, managed to pull the injured from the wreckage. All injured persons were taken to Burdwan Medical College Hospital,
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. While overspeeding is suspected to be the primary cause, officials are examining all possible angles. The accident has left families in Bihar devastated, with mourning reported across the victims’ home villages. The local administration has assured full support to the bereaved families.
