Health Dept rescues pregnant women, Delivers hope in flood-hit border villages
Ferozepur, August 25, 2025: The Health Department has emerged as a beacon of hope for the residents of flood-ravaged border villages along the India-Pakistan international border near the Sutlej River.
For Manjit Kaur from Tendi Wala village and Manpreet Kaur from Kalu Wala village, the department proved to be a lifesaver. Never in their wildest dreams did these women imagine giving birth under such dire flood conditions. The villages, already burdened by the constant threat of war and natural disasters like floods, have faced severe economic losses with acres of crops destroyed due to the raging Sutlej River. In this challenging time, the Health Department’s special medical camps have provided critical healthcare services, offering solace to affected families. From officers to staff, the department has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the community, becoming a pillar of support in this crisis.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Rajwinder Kaur shared that Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh had directed the department to extend all possible assistance to flood victims, particularly ensuring the safe rescue and delivery of pregnant women in distress. Following these orders, the Health Department successfully rescued Manjit Kaur from Tendi Wala and Manpreet Kaur from Kalu Wala, admitting them to the Civil Hospital, where they safely delivered their babies.
Manjit Kaur expressed her relief, stating that she and her family were deeply worried about accessing delivery services, medical expertise, and essential medicines during the crisis. “We were unsure how we would manage in such conditions, but with the help of the district administration and the Health Department, support arrived, giving us a ray of hope,” she said. She added that before the floods, they regularly attended ANC check-ups and vaccination camps in their village, but the disaster disrupted everything. The Health Department stepped in to ensure their care.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma, along with Deputy Mass Media Officers Ankush Bhandari and Neha Bhandari, stated that, as per Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh’s instructions, any pregnant woman wishing to stay at the hospital will be provided a homely environment, proper meals, and comprehensive healthcare facilities.
Social worker Vipul Kumar, known as Yes Man, praised the Health Department’s efforts, noting that their work is being widely discussed and appreciated. “The health workers are doing everything in their power to assist the people,” he said.
