Rupnagar (Punjab), September 2,2025: In Rupnagar district, embankments along the Sutlej River near Daudpur and Phassa villages in Sri Chamkaur Sahib suffered damage due to heavy water flow. Responding swiftly, the District Administration, Army teams, and local residents have been working round-the-clock to reinforce the bunds and prevent further risk.
Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia, accompanied by local MLA Dr. Charanjit Singh, SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana, and senior officials, visited the affected sites to assess the situation. The DC explained that heavy rainfall and rising levels at Bhakra Dam had led to excess water being released, causing pressure on the Sutlej embankments.
“Now the situation is completely under control. Water levels at Bhakra Dam have receded, and with the technical support of the Army, the embankments are being further strengthened. There is no cause for concern,” assured Walia.
The DC appealed to people not to believe in rumors and to trust only official advisories. Residents of houses located very close to rivers, canals, or streams have been asked to shift to safer areas. For emergencies, helpline numbers 01881-221157 and 112 have been activated.
SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana urged citizens to stay alert, avoid rumor-mongering, and strictly stay away from riverbanks and canals for their safety.
Other officials present included ADC Chandarjyoti Singh, IAS Officer Abhimanyu Malik, RTO Gurvinder Singh Johal, SDM Amrik Singh Sidhu, DSP Manjeet Singh Aulakh, and Executive Engineer (Mining) Tushar Goel.
