“Punjab is also part of India, then why this discrimination, Mr Modi?”-Giani Harpreet Singh questions Centre

Chandigarh, September 3, 2025: As Punjab reels under devastating floods, political tensions have escalated over the Centre’s alleged indifference towards the state’s plight. New Akali Dal president Giani Harpreet Singh strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the central government of ignoring Punjab in its hour of crisis.
Taking to social media, Singh wrote: “Mr. Prime Minister, it is good that you expressed sympathy for Afghanistan, but Punjab is also part of this very country, where nearly 1,500 villages and about 300,000 people have been badly affected since August 17. We regret that not a single tweet from you has acknowledged Punjab’s suffering.”
He also targeted Union Agriculture Minister, remarking that the minister responded almost 20 days after the disaster began.
Meanwhile, Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government echoed similar concerns, accusing the Centre of withholding full cooperation in relief and rescue operations. Party leaders questioned why Punjab, an integral part of India, was being denied urgent assistance during one of its worst floods in 37 years.
The political crossfire highlights growing friction between the state and the Centre, with both sides accusing each other of failing in their responsibilities, even as all 23 districts of Punjab have been officially declared flood-affected.
