Manali (Himachal Pradesh), October 6, 2025: Heavy snowfall has been reported since last night across Rohtang, Baralacha, and Shinkula passes, with accumulation exceeding half a foot in some areas.
The snow has caused severe traffic disruptions, stranding vehicles traveling to Leh and Zanskar in Darcha, while vehicles coming from Leh toward Manali are stuck at Upshi and Sarchu.
Although snowfall had begun on Sunday, traffic was able to move as the intensity was lower at Shinkula and Baralacha passes. On Monday, the snowfall intensified, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt.
Temporary Police Post Set Up in Sarchu
To assist tourists and drivers traveling to and from Leh-Ladakh, the Lahul-Spiti police had established a temporary post in Sarchu, which has now been shifted to Jispa due to heavy snowfall.
With police personnel no longer stationed at Sarchu, the risk for travelers on the Leh route has increased. Some roadside dhabas and a temporary BRO transit camp are still providing support, but drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Rohtang Pass Closed for Tourists
Rohtang Pass, a favorite tourist destination, remains closed to all vehicles. Authorities have stopped all tourist traffic at Gulaba. DSP Manali K.D. Sharma confirmed that heavy snowfall continues on the pass and urged tourists not to proceed beyond Gulaba. Access to the pass will remain dependent on weather conditions.
Snowfall Damages Apple Crops in Lahul Valley
In Lahul Valley, heavy snow is causing damage to apple orchards, with the weight of snow-laden branches risking breakage.
Farmers Ajit, Paljor, Ashok, and Dorje reported continuous snow accumulation on apple trees, which could worsen their losses. Following recent rainfall that already affected vegetable supply to markets, the ongoing snowfall has further compounded agricultural challenges in the valley.
