Organ Donation Awareness Week Celebrations from Nov 19-26
Health Dept pledges organ donation awareness on 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
Ferozepur, November 19, 2025: As part of the series of events dedicated to the 350th Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the Health Department, under the leadership of Civil Surgeon Dr Rajwinder Kaur, administered an organ donation pledge to inspire and educate Ferozepur residents about the importance of organ donation.
Dr Rajwinder Kaur said that on this sacred occasion, dedicated to the 9th Sikh Guru—symbol of compassion, sacrifice, and religious freedom—everyone should come forward with their families to pledge organ donation and contribute to this life-saving cause. She highlighted that in India, nearly 5 lakh people die every year due to the non-availability of organs, including about 2 lakh patients who die while waiting for a liver transplant. With advancements in medical science, organ transplants can now save numerous lives if organs are made available in a timely manner.
The Health Department is observing an Organ Donation Awareness Week from November 19 to 26 to promote wider understanding among the public.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma, Deputy MMOs Ankush Bhandari, and Neha Bhandari explained that organ donation is of two types—Living Donation, where a person aged 18 or above can donate organs like a kidney while alive, and Deceased Donation, where organs and tissues are donated after death, depending on the physical condition of the individual. They added that eye and tissue donation has no age limit.
Among those present were Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr Sushma Thakkar, District Immunisation Officer Dr Meenakshi Abrol, School Health Medical Officers Dr Harpreet Kaur and Dr Manmeet Singh, Dr Saminder, Superintendent Parmveer Monga, PA to Civil Surgeon Vikas Kalra, Mukha Kumar, and Pooja.
