Chandigarh, March 18, 2026: The Chandigarh Press Club has strongly condemned the use of derogatory and inappropriate language by Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira against senior journalist Jyoti Malhotra, Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune.
In a statement, the Press Club emphasized that while disagreement with a journalist’s reporting or opinions is a legitimate part of democratic discourse, it must always be expressed in a civil and responsible manner. The remarks made in the MLA’s tweet were described as “highly derogatory and unacceptable,” undermining both the dignity of the journalist and the standards of public discourse.
The Club urged political leaders to exercise restraint and respect while addressing media coverage. It highlighted that differences of opinion should never devolve into personal attacks, particularly when targeting women journalists.
Saurabh Duggal, President of the Chandigarh Press Club, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to defending the dignity and rights of the journalistic community.
