Chandigarh, April 25, 2026:Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has launched a sharp political attack on Rajya Sabha members who recently aligned with the BJP, triggering a major controversy in political circles.
Cheema alleged that signatures of Rajinder Gupta—currently undergoing surgery—and Swati Maliwal may have been forged to project the required two-thirds majority. He claimed that manipulation was carried out to legitimise the shift.
He further stated that Sanjay Singh and N D Gupta would meet the Chairman to submit a formal complaint seeking disqualification of the concerned members.
In a strong remark, Cheema accused former cricketer-turned-politician Harbhajan Singh of “betraying Punjab” to safeguard his commentary career. He also alleged that industrialist-turned-politician Ashok Mittal and others were pressured through raids and threats of factory shutdowns.
Issuing a warning, Cheema said those who switched sides would face public backlash, adding that “in 16 months, people of Punjab won’t even offer them a ride on a rickshaw.”
He added that if the Vice President acts on the complaint, the memberships of these MPs could be cancelled, and the Aam Aadmi Party would field new candidates for the vacant seats.
