Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and senior government officials to review the functioning of four help lines launched by the West Bengal government to enable citizens to directly report alleged extortion, syndicate activities, illegal road and toll collections, and illegal liquor trade.
The four toll-free helplines are 155334 for Extortion, 155335 for Syndicate, 155337 for Illegal Road/Toll Tax, and 155339 for Illegal Liquor. The public can use these numbers to register complaints directly regarding such activities.
During the meeting, Amit Shah stressed that swift action should be ensured on every complaint received through these helplines, with the objective of providing people with a direct and accessible mechanism to report grievances and seek government intervention.
The initiative is aimed at dismantling networks involved in extortion, syndicate operations and unauthorised collections, while strengthening accountability and ensuring that citizens can approach the authorities without intermediaries.
According to the BJP, the move is part of its broader commitment to free the people of West Bengal from what it described as a long-standing system of “extortion, syndicate rule and illegal collections.” The party alleged that such practices flourished during the Mamata Banerjee government and said the new administration is working to eliminate the system from the ground up.
The four help lines are:
- Extortion: 155334
- Syndicate: 155335
- Illegal Road/Toll Tax: 155337
- Illegal Liquor: 155339
The government has urged citizens to make use of these toll-free numbers to report violations, with authorities assuring prompt action on complaints received through the dedicated channels.
