Chandigarh, August 25 : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and Deputy Chief Minister Punjab Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal today hailed the landslide victory of SAD-BJP candidate Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu in the Talwandi Sabo assembly segment by poll and said the devastating defeat of both AAP candidates as well as the erosion in support for the Congress in Patiala was a reflection on the popularity of both parties. Expressing gratitude to the people of Talwandi Sabo for reposing their faith and confidence in the policies and programmes of the alliance government, Mr. Badal said the SAD candidate’s victory in Talwandi Sabo was a victory of the people in the real sense of the word as they had used their discretion and voted for development of the constituency. He said it was also noteworthy that AAP, which had relied on sensationalism and falsities during its election campaign, had been completely rejected by the people both in the Talwandi Sabo and Patiala assembly constituency. He said both AAP candidates lost their security deposit and the Patiala AAP candidate could secure only 5,700 votes. “SAD had maintained that AAP would be rejected by the people of both constituencies as the party had adopted a disruptive agenda which is anathema to Punjabis who want peace and progress. We have been proved rightâ€, he added. The SAD president said the party’s result in Patiala was also an improvement on its previous performance. “We have increased our vote share by 10 per cent vis a vis the 2012 assembly pollsâ€. Asserting that the by poll result was a verdict in favour of the pro people, transparent and effective governance of the SAD –BJP government led by Sardar Parkash Singh Badal, the SAD president said Pradesh Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa should now read the writing on the wall the resign from his post fortwith. “The Talwandi Sabo result is a mandate on the leadership qualities of Mr Partap Bajwa as it was he who led the campaign from start to finishâ€, Mr Badal said adding Mr Bajwa had lost all credibility as a politician after the humiliating defeat of the Congress candidate. The SAD president said the party was able to increase its vote share by a whopping 11.20 per cent in Talwandi Sabo where its candidate Jeet Mohinder defeated the Congress candidate by a margin of 46,000 votes. The Deputy CM said that the SAD-BJP alliance, which was a votary of communal harmony, peace and development, had already created a new record in the state polity by staging come back to power for second consecutive term in the 2012 assembly polls and also won the subsequent by polls in Dasuya and Moga. “The victory in Talwandi Sabo and the good showing in Patiala instill us with even greater humility and responsibility towards the aspirations of the people of the state in general and that of Talwandi Sabo and Patiala assembly segment in particularâ€, he said. Meanwhile, Mr Badal thanked all the workers, leaders, office bearers and rank and file of SAD-BJP for working day and night to ensure the thumping win at Talwandi Sabo. He also thanked the people for reposing faith in the ethos of democratic values by exercising their franchise freely.
