Chandigarh January 18, 2017: Total 1941 nominations have been received for Punjab Assembly election 2017. Today was the last date of filing nominations. The process of scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations will start henceforth.
According to Election Commission record, total 1878 nominations were received in Punjab Assembly election 2012 which shows the number has increased this time. Total 1078 candidates contested election in 2012 after the scrutiny and withdrawals.
Captain Amarinder Singh of Congress, Bhagwant Mann of AAP, Ravneet Bittu of Congress and Navjot Sidhu of Congress were among the prominent candidates who filed nominations from Lambi, Jalalabad and Amritsar East constituencies on the last day.
As many as 1040 nominations were filed on the last day while earlier total 901 nominations were filed. Ludhiana had the maximum 222 nominations filed while lowest of 37 were filed in district Fatehgarh Sahib. Likewise, total 15 nominations were filed for the Amritsar Bye-poll.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the Chief Electoral Office Punjab said that the scrutiny of papers would be done on January 19 whileJanuary 21 has been fixed for name withdrawals.
Giving details of the papers filed for different districts, the spokesperson said that total 196 candidates have filed nominations in district Amritsar, Barnala 44 , Bathinda 110, Faridkot 41, Fazilka 67, Fatehgarh Sahib 37, Ferozepur 70, Gurdaspur 106, Hoshiarpur 119, Jallandhar 146, Kapurthala 76, Ludhiana 222, Mansa 48, Moga 61, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Mohali 69, Muktsar 68, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar 45, Patiala 148, Pathankot 58, Rupnagar 41, Sangrur 115 and Tarntaran total 55 candidates filed the nomination papers.
