10 undertrials booked on 9 mobiles recovery from Central Jail
Ferozepur, September 9, 2026: The continuing recovery of mobile phones has raised serious security concerns for the jail authorities. On Wednesday, ten under-trial prisoners lodged in Central Jail Ferozepur were booked under the Punjab Prisons Correctional Service Act, 2026, following the recovery of six touchscreen mobile phones and three keypad mobile phones during checking inside the jail.
The repeated recovery of mobile phones and other prohibited articles, despite three layer security arrangements, from inside the jail highlights the continuing challenge faced by prison authorities in preventing banned material from reaching inmates.
As a precautionary measure, the jail authorities have installed mobile signal jammers around the jail to prevent the use of mobile phones inside the premises. However, their operation has reportedly caused inconvenience to members of the public living and working around the jail campus. The latest recovery of mobile phones has also raised questions over whether the jammers are being operated effectively or continuously, though this aspect would require verification by the authorities.
As many as 266 mobile phones have been recovered in 2026 including recent recovery besides various banned items, indicating that the problem continues to remain a major security challenge.
During the checking, seven red-coloured suspected intoxicant capsules and one white-coloured data cable were also recovered from Sandeep Singh. The jail authorities subsequently lodged a complaint against the undertrial prisoners under the relevant provisions of the Punjab Prisons Correctional Service Act, 2026.
According to the complaint filed by the Superintendent, Central Jail Ferozepur, the accused have been identified as Sandeep Singh, Akash alias Chotu, Gurdeep Singh, Karan Kumar, Sumeet, Arun alias Sarabjit Singh; Deepak alias Deepa, son of Babbu, Deepak Kumar, Bhuvnesh, and Rajiv Kumar, son of Bhoom Kumar, resident of Khuai Khema, whose arrest is yet to be made.
Meanwhile, Sukhdev Singh has been appointed as the Investigating Officer and further investigation into the matter is underway.
