Bharat Taxi launches in Chandigarh
Puts drivers at Centre of the cooperative mobility model

Chandigarh, September 18, 2026: Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based cab service, was formally launched in the Union Territory of Chandigarh on Friday, marking its entry into the city’s technology-driven mobility sector.
The service was launched at an event organised by the Department of Cooperation, Chandigarh Administration, with Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria as the chief guest. Union Ministers of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol and Union Minister of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal Gurjar also attended the event.
The initiative seeks to combine the cooperative model with digital technology, with drivers participating as members and stakeholders rather than merely serving as service providers.
During the launch, an audio-visual presentation on Bharat Taxi’s cooperative model and key features was screened. Share certificates were also distributed to five driver-members to recognise their participation as members and stakeholders.
Kataria digitally inaugurated the service and flagged off Bharat Taxi vehicles, formally commencing operations in Chandigarh.
Addressing the gathering, Kataria said the initiative would promote dignity of labour, cooperative ownership, technological self-reliance and inclusive growth. He said the model would enable drivers to participate in the platform as members and stakeholders.
The Chandigarh Administrator expressed confidence that Bharat Taxi would provide citizens with a safe, affordable and reliable mobility option while complementing the city’s existing public transport system. He assured the necessary support from the Chandigarh Administration and called for transparent operations, data security, fair fares, effective grievance redressal and greater use of electric and environment-friendly vehicles.
Gurjar said Bharat Taxi would make taxi drivers active participants in the platform and allow them to share in its profits as members and stakeholders. He said the initiative could contribute to improving drivers’ incomes and strengthening their social and economic security.
Mohol said around 10 lakh drivers had registered with Bharat Taxi across the country so far, including more than one lakh from Chandigarh. He said the launch in Chandigarh marked another phase in the expansion of the service.
According to the announcement, Bharat Taxi plans to expand its services to other cities in Punjab, including Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar, in the coming months.
Senior Chandigarh Administration officials, Bharat Taxi representatives, members of the cooperative sector, driver-members and other invited guests attended the launch.
