Food Safety Wing warns against milk adulteration

Ferozepur, August 10, 2026: The Food Safety Wing of the Health Departmenthas issued a strict warning against adulteration in milk and milk products and appealed to consumers, farmers, milk vendors and dairy operators to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities immediately.
Abhinav Khosla, Food Safety Officer said milk is an essential part of the daily diet, particularly for children and elderly persons, making its quality, purity and safety a major public-health concern. Regular inspections, sampling and testing of milk and dairy products are being conducted to detect adulteration and ensure compliance with food-safety standards. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also established the National Milk Quality Monitoring System for monitoring milk quality across the country.
According to FSSAI's prescribed testing methods, suspected milk samples may be examined for adulterants including added water, starch, urea, detergents or surfactants, maltodextrin/dextrin, glucose, cane sugar/sucrose and neutralisers. Certain hazardous substances associated with synthetic milk, including laundry detergents, pulverised soap, boric acid and hydrogen peroxide, are also covered under adulterant-testing procedures.
He clarified that there is no safe or permissible quantity or recipe for preparing synthetic or fake milk using non-permitted substances. Sharing such mixing formulas could pose a serious public-health risk.
Food Safety officials may conduct preliminary testing, check parameters such as Fat and SNF, collect samples as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and send samples to notified or recognised laboratories for detailed analysis wherever required.
Milk vendors, dairy owners, collection centres, wholesalers and retailers have been directed to procure products only from lawful sources, maintain purchase and sale records, possess valid Food Safety Licence/Registration, follow proper hygiene and storage practices and avoid supplying suspected adulterated products.
The department appealed to the public to report anyone preparing or supplying fake milk, ghee, paneer or other adulterated dairy products. Confidentiality of informants will be maintained as per applicable procedures.
Strict legal action will be taken against persons found preparing, storing, selling or supplying adulterated or unsafe food under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and applicable regulations.
“You provide the information—we will investigate. Together, let us make Ferozepur adulteration-free and Punjab safer,” the FSO said.
