India’s first Imaging Satellite for Geosynchronous Orbit launched; To aid agriculture, disaster management

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), September 4, 2026: India’s first imaging satellite for geosynchronous orbit was successfully launched aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in the early hours of Friday.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said the state-of-the-art Earth observation satellite EOS-05 was successfully placed into a sub-geosynchronous orbit approximately 18 minutes after lift-off.
The launch took place after a smooth 27-hour countdown, with the GSLV-F17 carrying a payload mass of 2,367 kg. The rocket lifted off precisely at 2:55 AM from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
EOS-05 is expected to provide real-time imagery and support a range of applications, including agriculture and disaster management.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the mission would further strengthen India’s Earth observation capabilities and improve the delivery of Earth observation services.
The successful launch marks another important milestone in India’s efforts to expand its space-based Earth observation and imaging capabilities.
