India to provide DNA profiling services to families of Indians missing in Nepal floods

New Delhi, September 4, 2026: The Centre will facilitate DNA profiling services for first-degree biological relatives of Indian nationals reported missing following the devastating flash floods in Nepal, as authorities continue efforts to identify those unaccounted for.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will make the services of Central Forensic Science Laboratories, State Forensic Science Laboratories and laboratories under the National Forensic Sciences University available for DNA profiling of eligible relatives residing in India.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that first-degree biological relatives of missing persons living in India can have their biological samples collected and DNA profiles prepared at designated facilities.
As advised by the Nepal Police, Autosomal STR DNA profiling may be carried out to assist with identification, subject to the technical requirements specified by the Nepali authorities.
The initiative is aimed at supporting the identification of Indian nationals who remain missing following the flash floods in Nepal and helping their families obtain clarity about their whereabouts.
