National Sports Day
Olympian Gagan Ajit inspires young hockey players on National Sports Day at Ferozepur
Ferozepur, August 29, 2025: On the occasion of National Sports Day, celebrated on the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, Olympian and present Senior Superintendent of Police, Malerkotla, Gagan Ajit Singh, visited Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium, Ferozepur—the ground where he once began his own sporting journey.
Major Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player. He is widely regarded as the greatest field hockey player in history. He was known for his extraordinary ball control and goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936, during an era where India dominated field hockey.
Marking the day with young players, Gagan Ajit encouraged them to pursue their dreams with dedication, patience, and clear goals. “Success comes only with hard work and honesty. If you have a target in life and work with determination, nothing is impossible,” he said while motivating the budding athletes.
An exhibition match was organized under the guidance of coach Manmeet Singh, where children participated with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, Gagan Ajit distributed hockey sticks, kits, T-shirts, and shorts to the players, ensuring that they do not face any shortage of facilities.
Recalling his early days, the Olympian expressed deep emotions about returning to the same ground where he trained as a child. “This ground is like a mother, which nurtured and shaped me. Seeing these young players reminds me of my own journey from here to the international level,” he said.
He also urged the youth to focus on discipline and long-term effort rather than seeking shortcuts, emphasizing that Punjab’s young talent has the potential to shine at the national and international level.
Present among others were Dr Satinder Singh Dy DEO and Ashok Behal, Secretary Red Cross (Retd.).
