Dalit youths allegedly tied and dragged in fields: Punjab SC Commission orders report

Chandigarh, June 7, 2026: The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has taken suo motu notice of an alleged incident in which two Dalit youths were reportedly tied with ropes and dragged through agricultural fields in village Jhorad of Sri Muktsar Sahib district.
The Commission's intervention comes after reports of the incident surfaced in the media, raising concerns over the alleged mistreatment of members of the Scheduled Castes community.
Providing details, Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi said the matter came to the Commission's attention through a newspaper report. Taking serious note of the allegations, the Commission has initiated proceedings on its own and sought a detailed report from the district police authorities.
Garhi stated that the Commission has directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sri Muktsar Sahib, through the SP Headquarters, to submit a factual report regarding the incident. The report has been sought by June 9, 2026.
"The Commission is committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Scheduled Castes and will closely examine the facts of the case once the report is received," Garhi said.
The alleged incident has drawn attention due to its serious nature, with the Commission expected to review the circumstances surrounding the case and determine further action based on the findings of the police inquiry.
