He has demanded a special 'Flood Relief Package' for Punjab, saying that the state is facing an unprecedented crisis and the Central Government should come forward for immediate help.
23 districts affected, more than 1300 villages submerged
Raja Warring in his letter drew the Prime Minister's attention to the devastating situation caused by floods in Punjab. He said that almost all the 23 districts of the state have been affected by floods, with Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Patiala, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur and Barnala being the worst affected. He wrote that so far more than 1300 villages have been affected by floods and 26 people have lost their lives in this disaster.
Loss of thousands of crores, paddy crop completely destroyed
In the letter, Raja Warring said that the estimated damage caused by the floods is in thousands of crores of rupees. Expressing concern, he said, "The standing paddy crop, which was almost ready for harvesting, has been completely submerged in water and cannot be saved now." He described the damage as a huge economic setback for the farmers of the state.
"This is our legitimate right" - Demand for immediate package
The Congress president stressed that according to the Meteorological Department, there is no hope of any relief from the rains for the next few days, which could worsen the situation. "The affected people have not yet received the necessary relief from the state government," he said.
Warring appealed to the Prime Minister for immediate intervention and said, "We demand an immediate and urgent Flood Relief Package for Punjab. We are not begging, but only demanding our legitimate rights."
