Chandigarh, September 30, 2025: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and National General Secretary Jagdeep Singh Cheema held a press conference at the Press Club, Chandigarh, today, announcing his resignation from all party posts and raising serious concerns about the current leadership.
Cheema had submitted his resignation via email in the morning. In response, the party issued a tweet in the afternoon announcing his expulsion, just two hours after his resignation.
Speaking at the press conference, Cheema highlighted his family’s deep-rooted association with the Akali Dal.
He said his grandfathers, Sardar Kehar Singh and Shamsher Singh, were among the founding members of the party in 1920, while his father, Sardar Randhir Singh Cheema, served as a senior leader, SGPC member, and Punjab government minister for several years.
Cheema criticized the current leadership, describing the party as “directionless and issueless.” He alleged that the leadership is surrounded by sycophants and gossipers, showing little concern for traditional Akali families or dedicated party workers. Ordinary workers, he said, have no access to senior leaders, and the party has failed to take a stand on sectarian issues or outline a clear strategy for Punjab’s present challenges.
He added that remaining silent under these circumstances would not do justice to his constituency and its people.
On his future political plans, Cheema stated, “The next decision will be made after consultation with our workers, constituents, and friends. Our goal is to bring our state and people out of this crisis.”
