Chandigarh, October 11, 2025: In the wake of the tragic death of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday visited the bereaved officer’s family to offer condolences and support.
The visit came shortly after the Haryana government removed Rohtak SP Narendra Bijraniya from his post, following the allegations mentioned in Puran Kumar’s suicide note. The government has now appointed IPS Surinder Singh Bhoria (2014 batch) as the new Superintendent of Police, Rohtak.
According to reports, ADGP Y. Puran Kumar was found dead at his residence in Chandigarh on October 7, having allegedly taken his own life.
A lengthy suicide note recovered from the scene accused Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, SP Bijraniya, and several other senior officers of caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and public humiliation.
Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, had strongly objected to the initial FIR, claiming it did not explicitly name the key accused. The family had refused to conduct the cremation until the government included the names of DGP Kapur and SP Bijraniya in the case and initiated action against them.
Following mounting pressure from the family and public outrage, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini convened a high-level meeting on Friday, after which the transfer orders were issued. The family reportedly agreed to allow the post-mortem only after receiving the government’s assurance of action.
