Chandigarh, December 27, 2025: In view of the onset of the winter season and harsh weather conditions, the Forest and Wildlife Preservation Department, Punjab, under the leadership of Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, has put in place special arrangements to ensure a hygienic, safe and protective environment for animals housed at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir.
For carnivorous animals, room heaters and heat convectors have been installed in the night shelters of tigers, leopards, lions and other small cats.
All windows and openings have been properly covered with polythene or fibre sheets along with sacrum grass thatch to prevent cold winds. Additional temperature control measures have been ensured for young and aged animals to protect them from extreme cold.
Special provisions have also been made for herbivorous animals. Temporary shelters and huts have been created in their enclosures using binding wire and ropes, along with waterproof roofing arrangements using black tarpaulin sheets. Paddy straw and wheat husk bedding has been provided to ensure warm and comfortable flooring for all herbivores.
To safeguard birds from winter chill and rain, all bird cages have been covered with fibre cloth, jute mats and polythene sheets. Warm bedding using paddy straw, wheat husk and rice bran has been arranged for nesting.
The front coverings of bird cages have been made foldable to allow sunlight when required. Additionally, pheasant enclosures have been enriched with grass, paddy and kanna structures to create a cosy environment.
The Reptile House has also been fully equipped to deal with winter conditions. Oil fin heaters have been installed, as they maintain warmth without disturbing natural humidity levels. Reptile enclosures have been provided with wheat husk, dry leaf foliage and heavy blankets for added comfort. Special UV lamps have been fitted in the reptile section, while turtles and tortoises have been provided with aquarium water heaters along with water circulation systems.
These comprehensive winter care measures reflect the Punjab government’s commitment to animal welfare and ensuring the well-being of wildlife during extreme weather conditions.
