New Delhi, 5 February -- Terming the President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of both the Houses of Parliament as a ‘strategic blueprint’ for a Viksit Bharat, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Satnam Singh Sandhu said the Union government has taken historic initiatives in the past 11 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritise growth and opportunities for each segment of the society.
Participating in the discussion on the ‘Motion of Thanks to the President's Address' in Rajya Sabha during the ongoing Budget Session, Sandhu said he bows to this historic document as the President has mentioned the words uttered by the ninth Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, “fear not, nor instill fear in others” in this historic document and remembered him twice in it which shows the present Union government is drawing inspiration from the Gurus and following their principles.
“The Prime Minister has also reiterated these words many times. This is not just a spiritual message; it is the doctrine of national security for today's India: neither to intimidate anyone, nor to be intimidated by anyone. Under the leadership of PM Modi, this principle has brought India diplomatic and economic successes all over the world. We have seen a few days back that India has done a historic Free Trade Agreement with European Union and also done a trade agreement with the US. I feel India is moving forward following the path shown by the Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji,”.
“On the one hand, PM Modi has given so much respect to the Sikh community, but on the other hand a shameful incident took place in this sacred Parliament when a Sikh Minister was called a traitor. Sikhs all over the world have been saddened by this incident. Sikh community is facing challenges and fighting hard all over the world to preserve its unique identity. But it’s really sad on the very stairs of this sacred Parliament, a Sikh Minister was bullied and mocked by a leader of the Opposition,” he said condemning this incident.
Rajya Sabha Member Sandhu further said under the leadership of PM Modi, the Union government has done many historical things in the past 11 years to honor the Sikh Gurus. “During the 550th Prakash Parv (birth anniversary) of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the government showed great respect for the Gurus by removing 312 Sikhs living abroad for 40 years from the blacklist and establishing 'Guru Nanak Chairs' in foreign universities. Similarly, on the 350th Prakash Parv of the 10th Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the government allocated Rs 100 Crore for the development of Patna Sahib. Understanding the sentiments of the Sikh community, the opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, the decision to build the Hemkund Sahib ropeway at a cost of Rs 2700 Crore, the removal of GST from Langar (community kitchen) and the declaration of Veer Bal Diwas in commemoration of the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas (sons of Guru Gobind Singh). We are also thankful to PM Modi for opening IIM in Guru Nagari Amritsar, AIIMS in Bathinda, and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Mohali. These world-class institutions have strengthened Punjab in the field of education and health. Along with this, he has increased the capacity of airports in Punjab and now four domestic and two international airports are operational in the state. A few days ago, the Prime Minister has given a great honour to the sentiments of the Punjabis by naming Adampur Airport in Punjab after Sri Guru Ravidas Ji,” he said.
MP Satnam Singh Sandhu further said all hopes of getting justice for the Sikhs in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots had ended. “In the government of PM Modi, an SIT was formed, hundreds of cases were reopened, compensation was received, and the big political faces who killed the Sikhs reached the dock of punishment. After decades of silence, for the first time the State listened to the Sikhs and started giving justice,” he said.
Supporting the ‘Motion of Thanks’, MP Sandhu said the President’s address, which starts from vision and goes all the way to action, is a confluence of both, clarity of governance and conviction of nation-building. “It clearly indicates that this government is not a promoter of Status Quo, but a driver of systemic transformation. There is no inertia here, there is initiative; there is no delay, there is decisiveness,” he said adding priorities of the government speak on every page of this historic document.
Sandhu further said, “Mention of food givers (farmers) eight times and the poor ten times is a living proof of the government's commitment. Mention of women's empowerment 18 times, youth power 20 times and the concerns of the underprivileged 17 times shows inclusivity is not just a slogan but a solution for the government. And when employment is mentioned 11 times and development 23 times, it is clear that this government is not giving importance to symbolism, but to growth and opportunities,”.
