The vibrant three-day Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela commenced today at the ITI Ground, Nawanshahr, with a grand inauguration by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Avneet Kaur.
The event, organized by the Rural Development and Panchayat Department in collaboration with the Industries and Commerce Department under the Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission, aims to foster women empowerment and provide a platform for self-help groups to showcase their talents and products.
Avneet Kaur, accompanied by Assistant Commissioner General Jagdeep Singh, inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Speaking on the occasion, she emphasized the significance of such fairs in encouraging women to take entrepreneurial strides and contribute to their communities.
"The Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela will play an important role in further empowering women by giving them opportunities to display their skills and market their products," she stated.
The mela features over 50 stalls set up by various self-help groups and concerned departments. Among the highlights are stalls showcasing home décor items, handicrafts, organic products, homemade spices, pickles, and swings.
The event also includes cultural programs performed by school students, adding a festive touch to the fair. Avneet Kaur interacted with members of the self-help groups, appreciating their efforts and encouraging them to continue their endeavors.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of public participation in supporting these women-led initiatives. "I appeal to everyone to visit this fair in large numbers and promote the products made by self-help groups. This will not only help strengthen women empowerment but also provide these groups with better marketing opportunities for their products," she added.
The exhibition of self-help group products is one of the key attractions, offering a platform for these entrepreneurs to reach a wider audience. Visitors can enjoy a variety of items while supporting local talent and craftsmanship. The fair also features food stalls and children’s swings, making it a family-friendly event.
Special guests at the mela included Block President Women Wing Gurpreet Kaur, District Education Officer Anita, District Child Protection Officer Kanchan Arora, and other officials who lauded the initiative and its impact on women's livelihoods.
The Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela is not just an exhibition but a celebration of women's resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. With its blend of cultural programs, shopping opportunities, and community engagement, the mela promises to be a memorable event for all attendees.
