‘RERA must be strengthened, not diluted’: Abhay Jindal calls for bringing contractors under regulatory framework

New Delhi, February 17, 2026: Amid recent observations by the Supreme Court of India questioning the effectiveness of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) and expressing concerns over whether it adequately protects homebuyers, industry stakeholders have called for strengthening — not weakening — the regulatory architecture.
Reacting to the development, Abhay Jindal, Managing Director of Homeland Group, asserted that reforms must reinforce accountability across the entire real estate development chain.
“RERA must be strengthened, not diluted. Contractors play a decisive role in project execution — they directly influence construction timelines, quality standards and delivery commitments. Any meaningful reform must recognise their importance and ensure equal accountability across the development chain to truly safeguard homebuyers’ interests,” Jindal said.
He emphasised that contractors should be formally brought under the RERA framework. While developers and channel partners are governed by RERA’s transparency norms, he noted that contractors are the primary on-ground executors responsible for implementation.
“Bringing contractors under RERA will ensure stronger compliance, clearly defined responsibilities and enhanced protection for homebuyers,” he added.
Jindal maintained that broadening accountability would help restore buyer confidence and ensure that the original objectives of RERA — transparency, timely delivery and consumer protection — are effectively achieved.
