Chandigarh, March 26, 2026: Former senior IAS officer K. J. S. Cheema, who recently joined the Shiromani Akali Dal, has opened up about his journey from the armed forces to civil services and now politics, stating that his focus has always remained on public service rather than position.
In an interview with senior journalist Baljit Balli, Cheema spoke candidly about his career, highlighting that despite holding top administrative roles, he never developed a sense of bureaucratic superiority. “I never carried an ‘officer-like’ attitude, even during my service,” he remarked.

Cheema, who served extensively in the West Bengal cadre, shared that his long tenure in the state helped him gain fluency in Bengali and gave him exposure to diverse administrative challenges.
Explaining his decision to enter politics, Cheema said his aim is to ensure better implementation of public welfare schemes and improve delivery of basic services to people. Reflecting on his experience working with former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, he noted that there is a fine distinction between administration and politics, which needs careful understanding.
On contesting elections, Cheema clarified that the decision rests entirely with the party leadership and that he has no personal ambitions. “I will follow the directions of the party,” he said.
Praising Sukhbir Singh Badal, he described him as a forward-thinking leader with a strong vision for future development, adding that his approach goes beyond present challenges to long-term progress.
