The Election Commission of India has announced a Special Intensive Revision of Voter Lists, set to be conducted transparently across the district from June 25 to July 24, 2026.
Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Amit Kumar Panchal provided detailed information regarding this process.
The initiative, aimed at ensuring the accuracy of voter lists in Punjab, will involve Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting households to collect voter information. A robust team comprising 753 BLOs, 81 supervisors, 4 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and 8 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) has been appointed to undertake this task. Each BLO is responsible for approximately 300 households and 1,200 voters.
To prepare them adequately, special training sessions for BLOs are scheduled between June 15 and June 24, 2026. Panchal emphasized the importance of cooperation from voters during this process and urged them to complete the necessary forms. He reminded citizens that double voting is a punishable offense under the Indian Constitution, carrying a maximum imprisonment of one year.
The district has already made significant progress in pre-SIR mapping, with 92.40% of voters—638,878 out of a total of 691,402 successfully mapped. This includes both urban and rural areas. The eligibility date for the revision is set as January 1, 2003, allowing current voter lists to be seamlessly linked with older ones.
In addition to the revision, polling station rationalization will be carried out by July 24, 2026. The draft voter list will be published on July 31, 2026, following which objections and claims can be submitted until August 30, 2026. These will be addressed between July 31 and September 28, culminating in the release of the final voter list on October 1, 2026.
During this process, Aadhaar cards will be accepted as a source of identification but not as conclusive proof of identity. Panchal also stressed the importance of political parties appointing block-level agents to ensure smooth proceedings. He assured that political parties would be actively involved at every stage of the revision.
Voters were encouraged to cooperate fully and assist BLOs in completing this critical task effectively. The District Election Officer reaffirmed that this effort is being meticulously planned and executed to uphold transparency and accuracy in electoral processes within the district.
