Punjab MC Polls: Govt grants paid leave for employees, workers on May 26

Chandigarh, May 25, 2026: The Punjab Government has announced special voting leave for adult workers and employees employed in establishments, including factories, across the state to enable them to cast their votes in the Municipal Corporation General Elections 2026 scheduled for May 26.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Labour Department, the exemption will apply to all eligible voters working within the revenue jurisdictions of the Municipal Corporations where polling will be conducted on Tuesday, May 26.
The state government has also granted exemption to employees working in registered shops and commercial establishments under the provisions of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act.
Workers registered as voters in Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats will be allowed leave to exercise their franchise on polling day.
The notification clarified that May 26 will not be treated as an additional mandatory holiday. Instead, employers may adjust the leave against the regular weekly holiday falling between May 24 and May 30, 2026.
