HC appointed Observers hit the ground as polling for Local Government bodies begins in Punjab

Chandigarh, May 26, 2026: After the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders, observers appointed the court have hit the ground and are performing their duties of monitoring during Municipal elections in Punjab voting for which began at 8.00 AM today May 26.
Yesterday bench of Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi and Justice Deepak Manchanda had ordered appointment of these observers while disposing of several election related petitions.
Petitioners had demanded appointment of observers, installation of CCTV cameras inside and outside polling booths and safe houses where ballot boxes are to be kept after polling and places where counting of votes will take place on May 29.
Court had accepted arguments of the petitioners and order fool proof arrangements to Punjab State Election Commission as well Punjab government so as to ensure free and fair elections.
Petitioners will provide vehicle for travel to these observers who will be paid Rs. 1 lakh by cheque per observer before start of their duty.
Today morning these observers were seen performing their duties in several areas where voting is going on.
