Firozpur Rail Division accelerates Green Energy Transition through Solar Power Expansion
Ferozepur, May 26, 2026: Firozpur Rail Division is steadily advancing towards sustainable and renewable energy adoption through the large-scale installation of rooftop solar power systems at railway stations under the Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar Scheme. This initiative forms an important part of Indian Railways’ broader commitment to environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient transportation infrastructure.
At present, rooftop solar power systems are operational at 22 railway stations across the Division, with a cumulative installed capacity of 846 kW. In a significant recent development, rooftop solar plants with a combined planned capacity of 400 kW have been successfully commissioned at 12 additional locations. The electricity generated from these systems is directly integrated with station electrical loads, thereby reducing dependence on conventional grid power and lowering electricity expenditure.
During the financial year 2025–26, the installed solar infrastructure has generated approximately 5,31,076 units of green energy. This has resulted in estimated savings of nearly ₹37.18 lakh in electricity costs, demonstrating both the economic and environmental advantages of renewable energy integration within railway operations.
The initiative is contributing substantially towards:
• Reduction in electricity consumption from conventional energy sources
• Significant savings in operational energy expenditure
• Improved energy security and reliability at railway stations
• Promotion of clean, renewable, and sustainable energy practices
• Reduction in carbon emissions and overall environmental impact
In line with its long-term sustainability roadmap, Firozpur Division has also set an ambitious target for the installation of an additional 1.15 MW of solar power capacity during Financial Year 2026-27. Upon completion, the expanded solar infrastructure is expected to further strengthen energy efficiency, enhance power reliability, reduce carbon footprint, and contribute meaningfully towards environmental conservation.
