Mohali, May 30, 2026: With the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing a clear majority in the Municipal Corporation elections, political attention in Mohali has now shifted to the crucial question of who will be chosen as the city's next Mayor.
Three names have emerged as prominent contenders for the coveted post — Sukhdev Singh Patwari, Sarabjit Singh Samana, and Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia.
Among them, political observers believe that Sukhdev Singh Patwari enjoys a distinct edge owing to his seniority, administrative experience, and long-standing association with public affairs. Patwari has been elected as a Municipal Councillor for the fourth time and most recently registered a convincing victory from Ward No. 34, reflecting his sustained popularity and grassroots connect.
Known for his active involvement in civic and social issues, Patwari is regarded as one of the most experienced faces in municipal politics. Supporters point to his deep understanding of urban governance and local administration as qualities that could prove valuable in leading the Municipal Corporation.
Apart from his role as a councillor, Patwari has played a significant role in Mohali's cooperative and social sectors. He served as Vice Chairman of the Mohali Cooperative Bank for nearly a decade and was also President of the Mohali Press Club, where he frequently highlighted issues related to civic amenities, public welfare and urban development.
Over the years, he has cultivated a reputation as an accessible and people-oriented leader with strong ties across various sections of society.
Also in the race is Sarabjit Singh Samana, a second-term councillor and son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh. Samana is considered an influential contender with strong political backing and an active presence in local affairs.
The third major aspirant is Dr. Sunny Singh Ahluwalia, who has entered the Municipal Corporation for the first time but is viewed as a promising face among the younger generation of political leaders.
While the final decision rests with the AAP leadership, discussions within political circles suggest that experience, organizational contribution and public acceptability are likely to play a significant role in the selection process.
As the party prepares to take a call on the issue, all eyes are on the AAP high command to decide who will be entrusted with the responsibility of becoming the First Citizen of Mohali and steering the city's development agenda in the years ahead.
