Punjab, Chandigarh brace for thunderstorms as IMD issues rain and wind warning

Chandigarh, June 5, 2026: The weather across Punjab and Chandigarh has taken a noticeable turn, with the Meteorological Department issuing alerts for rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the next 24–48 hours.
According to the weather update, wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 km per hour, accompanied by lightning and scattered rainfall in several districts. The advisory covers multiple parts of the state, indicating unstable atmospheric conditions.
Despite a slight rise of 0.2°C in the average maximum temperature over the last 24 hours, overall temperatures remain 2.7°C below normal, offering temporary relief from intense summer heat. The highest temperature in the region was recorded in Bathinda at 42.6°C, while Chandigarh recorded 5.6 mm of rainfall.
Districts including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and surrounding areas are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning activity, and light to moderate rain.
In several regions such as Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Barnala, rainfall activity is also expected at isolated locations.
However, districts including Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, and Sri Muktsar Sahib have not been placed under any specific weather alert.
The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, led by Director Surender Pal Singh, stated that intermittent rainfall is likely at a few locations on June 6, 7, and 10, while no major temperature change is expected over the next three days. After this brief spell of unstable weather, a rise in heat conditions is likely to return across the region.
