US Intelligence Chief Releases Documents Alleging Fauci Funded Wuhan Research, Manipulated COVID Intelligence

Washington, D.C., June 19, 2026: In a major development that could reignite the debate over the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard on Thursday released a set of previously classified communications and documents alleging that former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci funded gain-of-function research at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology and later influenced intelligence assessments to conceal the virus's possible laboratory origin.
According to an official statement issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the newly declassified documents claim that Fauci directed millions of dollars in US taxpayer funding towards coronavirus research at the Wuhan laboratory, which the release describes as the likely source of the unintentional lab leak that triggered the global pandemic.
The ODNI further alleges that Fauci worked closely with senior intelligence officials to suppress the lab-leak theory and shape official assessments favouring a natural origin of the virus. The release claims that Fauci also misled Congress during his 2024 testimony by denying any involvement in discussions with US intelligence agencies regarding viral research and COVID-19 origins.
DNI Tulsi Gabbard said the American people deserve "transparency, truth and accountability" after years of what she described as "lies, censorship and cover-ups."
The intelligence chief alleged that the documents reveal how intelligence assessments were manipulated, dissenting opinions were suppressed, and whistleblowers faced retaliation for challenging the official narrative regarding the virus's origin.
According to the release, a year-long declassification review uncovered testimony from multiple intelligence community whistleblowers who claimed analysts supporting the lab-leak hypothesis were marginalized, threatened with career consequences, or excluded from key discussions.
The documents also allege that Fauci maintained close ties with intelligence officials, enabling him to influence both intelligence assessments and public messaging during the pandemic. The ODNI claims that scientists funded by Fauci's agency were presented as independent experts while alternative viewpoints received little consideration.
Among the allegations, the release states that Fauci promoted scientific publications supporting a natural origin theory while behind the scenes encouraging intelligence agencies to adopt similar conclusions.
The ODNI has referred several whistleblower allegations concerning retaliation and suppression of dissent to the Intelligence Community Inspector General for further review.
The documents released by the intelligence office represent allegations made by the current US administration and have already sparked renewed debate over the origins of COVID-19. Dr. Anthony Fauci has consistently denied allegations that he funded gain-of-function research leading to the pandemic or improperly influenced intelligence assessments, and any findings related to these claims remain subject to ongoing public and scientific scrutiny.
