Chandigarh/Patiala, July 3, 2026: Acting on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Punjab Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has significantly increased power supply to farmers even beyond the promised 8 hours per day. PSPCL CMD Dr. Basant Garg said that the power situation in the State is completely normal and agricultural feeders across Punjab have received up to 20 hours of power supply during the last 24 hours.
He clarified that the state had experienced temporary power shortfall for a few days between 27 and 30 June, during which only some agricultural feeders received 6–7 hours of supply instead of the scheduled 8 hours. This disruption of just 1-2 hours was caused by the simultaneous impact of record electricity demand during the severe heat wave leading to no power availability on the exchange and the strike by contractual workers at thermal power plants, which affected power generation. Despite these exceptional circumstances, PSPCL worked round the clock to ensure 6-7 hours power supply. With the strike now withdrawn and thermal generating units back in operation, normal power supply has been fully restored across the State.
The CMD said that, on the directions of the Chief Minister, PSPCL has already begun providing additional power to the affected agricultural feeders to fully compensate for the temporary shortfall. He reiterated that the Government has taken a clear decision that farmers will not bear the burden of an exceptional situation beyond anyone's control. He further said that PSPCL has made special operational arrangements to ensure reliable electricity supply throughout the ongoing paddy season. Field officers have been directed to continuously monitor feeder-wise supply, optimise power availability and respond promptly to any local issues so that irrigation requirements are fully met.
Reaffirming its commitment to the farming community, the Punjab Government said that protecting farmers' interests remains its highest priority. The Government is ensuring that reliable electricity supply is maintained across the State and that every affected farmer receives the additional power required to make up for the temporary shortfall.
