Rain likely across 16 Punjab districts; Heavy rain alert for three

Chandigarh, July 12, 2026: Monsoon activity remained active across Punjab and Chandigarh on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rainfall in 16 districts of the state.
A yellow alert has been issued for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Light to moderate rain is expected in Gurdaspur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Mohali, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Moga, Barnala, and Sangrur. Several of these districts may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds.
The weather department said that while no heavy rainfall warning has been issued for the period between July 13 and July 17, scattered showers are likely to continue across the state. However, monsoon activity is expected to weaken from Monday, resulting in a rise in humidity and sultry weather conditions.
Punjab recorded 52.8 mm of rainfall between July 1 and July 11, which is 6 per cent above the normal average of 49.6 mm for the period.
Meanwhile, the state's average maximum temperature dropped by 0.8 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day, remaining close to normal levels. Faridkot recorded the highest maximum temperature in Punjab at 40.5 degrees Celsius.
