Chandigarh, July 13, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday announced a major crackdown on private schools, directing all unaided institutions in the state to submit their fee records for the past three years within 10 days. He said schools found to have collected fees beyond the prescribed norms will be required to refund the excess amount to parents.
Addressing a press conference, Mann said Punjab would become the first state in the country to ensure that parents are reimbursed for fees allegedly collected by private schools in violation of government regulations.
The Chief Minister said nearly 7,800 private schools across Punjab have been instructed to furnish complete details of fee revisions made over the last three academic years, including the basis on which the hikes were implemented.
“No school will dare refuse to submit its records. Every institution will have to account for its fee structure,” Mann asserted.
Responding to concerns about the future of students if a school’s affiliation is cancelled for non-compliance, Mann said the government would ensure that no child is deprived of education.
“If such a situation ever arises, the Punjab Government will make full arrangements for the students’ education,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the scrutiny would reveal cases where schools had charged fees beyond the permissible limits, following which parents would be refunded the excess amount. He added that some schools may voluntarily begin the refund process in view of the government’s strict stand.
The announcement comes as the Punjab Government intensifies its efforts to regulate private school fees and provide financial relief to parents across the state.
