Four FIRs Registered in Chandigarh Over Quami Insaf Morcha Protests; 17 Persons Arrested

Chandigarh, August 17, 2026: Chandigarh Police have registered four separate FIRs in connection with protests and gatherings organised by the Quami Insaf Morcha (QIM) and other organisations on August 15, with 17 persons arrested in three of the cases, according to a police press note.
In the first case, FIR No. 97, registered at Police Station North under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), eight persons were arrested following a gathering/march near Punjab Lok Bhawan in Sector 6, Chandigarh. The case was registered on the complaint of SI Vivek Kumar.
Those arrested were Emaan Singh Mann, Rachhpal Singh, Sant Baba Charanjit Singh, Jatinder Singh, Jasvir Singh, Gurpant Singh, Mandeep Kaur and Rajinder Kaur Sran. Police said further investigation in the case is in progress.
In another case, FIR No. 137, registered at Police Station Sector-36, police booked persons in connection with a gathering of QIM and other organisations at Mattour Barrier on the Sector 51/52 dividing road. According to the police, the gathering blocked the road and some participants allegedly attempted to break police barricades to enter Chandigarh. The police press note alleged that participants were carrying swords, axes, spears and other weapons and were raising slogans demanding the release of Sikh detainees.
The case includes charges under several provisions of the BNS, the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The investigation has been taken up against Bapu Gurcharan Singh, Gurdeep Bathinda, Sukhjinder Singh Khosa, Sukh Gill Moga, Pal Singh France, Baba Raja Raj Singh, Gurvinder Singh Bhangu, Surjeet Phool, Bhana Sidhu, Baljit Singh Khalsa, Lakha Sidhana, Amitoz Mann, Navdeep Jalbera and others allegedly involved in the incident.
A third case, FIR No. 96, was registered at Police Station North in connection with a QIM protest at Heera Singh Chowk. Police alleged that protesters violated orders of the District Magistrate, obstructed police personnel performing law-and-order duty and attempted to cross police barricades.
The case is against four persons — Simranjit Singh Mann, Dpinder Partap Singh, Gopal Singh and Gurpreet Singh. The police press note further alleges that Simranjit Singh Mann disguised himself as a patient and sat inside an ambulance. Investigation is underway.
In the fourth case, FIR No. 106, registered at Police Station East, Sector 26, police arrested nine persons after checking two suspected vehicles at the Sector 7/8 dividing road. The vehicles, a Kia bearing registration number PB07 CL 9319 and an Innova bearing registration number PB10 EU 5454, allegedly contained persons associated with the Quami Insaf Morcha.
Police said four swords were recovered during the search, with two swords recovered from each vehicle. The vehicles and weapons were taken into possession for further investigation.
The nine arrested persons were identified as Tarun Jain, Harkirat Singh, Fathe Singh, Gurshant Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Harjit Singh, Amandeep Singh, Avtar Singh and Sandeep Kumar, all stated in the press note to be from Ludhiana or the Ludhiana district.
The police said investigations into the cases are continuing.
