Don’t Get Married Abroad! Why did PM Modi advise Indians?

New Delhi, September 1, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to embrace the principles of ‘Swadeshi’ and ‘Vocal for Local’, asking people to prioritise domestic products, tourism and celebrations over spending abroad.
In a video message shared on social media on Tuesday, Modi specifically urged Indians to avoid travelling abroad merely for tourism and discouraged hosting weddings in foreign countries. He called for people to follow the mantra of “Weddings in India.”
“If you travel abroad for tourism, you should avoid it. If you have weddings abroad, you should avoid it. The mantra of ‘Weddings in India’ should be followed,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi also appealed to people to avoid buying gold unless it is absolutely necessary, while stressing the importance of strengthening domestic consumption and self-reliance.
His remarks come as destination weddings abroad have become increasingly popular among Indian couples, extending beyond a small section of wealthy families. Thailand, Sri Lanka and other overseas locations have emerged as popular choices for Indian weddings.
The Prime Minister said that greater emphasis on Swadeshi and self-reliance would help strengthen the Indian economy and contribute to the goal of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, when India completes 100 years of Independence.
Modi called on citizens to make collective efforts towards this goal, saying that the combined strength of 1.4 billion Indians could take the country to new heights.
