Channi to Receive Sansad Ratna Award for Outstanding Performance as Parliamentary Committee Chairman
The 16th Edition of the Sansad Ratna Awards 2026 will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 5:00 pm at Bhim Hall, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Gate No. 1, 15 Janpath, New Delhi.
For Channi, therefore, the Sansad Ratna honour comes at a politically intriguing moment—recognition from outside his party coinciding with what his supporters see as a significant shift within the Congress high command in Punjab.

Chandigarh, September 6, 2026 : Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi, who chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing, will be conferred the prestigious Sansad Ratna Award for the committee’s outstanding performance.Channi represents Jalandhar ( R) Lok Sabha contiuency of Punjab.
Channi told Babushahi that various Parliamentary Standing Committees were assessed on their functioning and performance, with the committee headed by him securing the top position.
The 16th Edition of the Sansad Ratna Awards 2026 will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 5:00 pm at Bhim Hall, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Gate No. 1, 15 Janpath, New Delhi. The function will felicitate top-performing Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Standing Committees. Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, will be the Chief Guest, while Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, will be the Guest of Honour. Hon’ble Justice Shri B. R. Gavai, former Chief Justice of India, will deliver the keynote address, and the event will be presided over by Shri Hansraj G. Ahir, former Chairman of NCBC and Chairman of the Jury Committee.
This will be Channi’s second Sansad Ratna Award. He had received the honour last year for his individual performance as a Lok Sabha member. The present award, however, is being given in recognition of the performance of the Parliamentary Standing Committee under his chairmanship.
Channi said Parliamentary committees play an important role in examining public issues and contributing to policy discussions. The committee under his chairmanship has dealt with several issues directly concerning farmers, livestock owners and the rural economy. In its report submitted last year, the committee had also recommended that MSP should be recognised as a right of farmers, making the panel’s work particularly significant in the context of agricultural policy and farmers’ concerns.
He described the award as a collective achievement of all committee members and those associated with its functioning, rather than a personal honour. He said members had taken up issues concerning agriculture, animal husbandry and food processing seriously and worked to highlight challenges affecting these sectors at the parliamentary level.
Channi said he regarded the recognition not only as a matter of pride but also as a greater responsibility. He added that efforts would continue to improve the committee’s functioning and raise issues concerning farmers and rural areas more effectively.
The award also comes at an interesting political juncture for Channi. While he is being honoured by a function associated with a BJP-led Union Government, Channi remains a Congress MP and has recently been at odds with his own party’s Punjab leadership over the continuation of Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president. His open disagreement with the state leadership and increasingly assertive stance towards the Congress high command have kept him at the centre of the party’s internal power struggle. The recent removal of Bhupesh Baghel as Punjab Congress in-charge and his replacement by Sachin Pilot is being viewed in political circles as a setback for the camp led by Raja Warring that supported the status quo, and consequently as an indirect political gain for Channi, who had been pressing for a change in the Punjab Congress leadership
