Chandigarh, September 20, 2026: Voting for the Panjab University (PU) Senate elections began peacefully on Sunday, with long queues reported at polling booths across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh.
The voting is being held for the Registered Graduates Constituency, one of the key constituencies of the university’s Senate, the apex governing body of Panjab University. Young as well as older graduate voters were seen turning up at polling stations since morning.
A total of 51 candidates are contesting for 15 Ordinary Fellow (Senator) seats from the Registered Graduates Constituency, making it a multi-cornered contest.
Thousands of registered graduate voters included in the university’s final electoral roll are eligible to cast their votes in today’s election.
The university administration has made arrangements for the smooth and transparent conduct of polling. Voters are required to carry valid identity proof at the polling stations. Special polling centres have been set up at colleges and schools in different districts.
Police personnel and university security staff have also been deployed outside polling stations to maintain security and prevent any untoward incident.
The Senate plays a key role in the administrative and policy-related functioning of Panjab University. Major matters concerning academic standards, financial administration, and the interests of teachers and students come under the purview of the university’s governing bodies.
Besides the Registered Graduates Constituency, the election process for different categories, including teaching departments, affiliated colleges and professors, is being conducted in separate stages.
After polling concludes on Sunday evening, all ballot boxes will be transported under tight security to the Gymnasium Hall at the Panjab University campus in Sector 14, Chandigarh.
As per the scheduled programme, counting of votes will begin at 9:30 am on September 23, following which the results will be formally declared.
