Chandigarh, October 11, 2026: Pargat Singh formally took charge as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on Sunday, pledging to practise “clean politics” and avoid political vendetta as senior party leaders gathered at the Congress headquarters in Chandigarh to mark the occasion.
The oath-taking ceremony was held amid heavy rain, which forced party workers and supporters to seek shelter under umbrellas while raising slogans in support of the new state Congress chief.
Punjab Congress affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot led the gathering, which included former PPCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari. AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal could not attend due to prior engagements in Delhi.
Before taking charge, Pargat Singh said he was beginning his new responsibility on the occasion of the first Navratra. He said addressing Punjab’s problems and fulfilling the aspirations of ordinary people would be his priorities.
Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, he alleged that its policies had harmed Punjab and that the bureaucracy was being used as a tool by the ruling party. He called on government officials to discharge their duties responsibly.
“I want to announce that I will do clean politics and not indulge in vendetta politics,” Pargat Singh said.
Warring pledges continued support to Congress
Warring, who was present at the ceremony despite reported differences with a section of party leaders, congratulated Pargat Singh and said he would continue working for the Congress.
“I will continue to work for the betterment of the Congress. My only leader is Rahul Gandhi,” Warring said.
He also urged Rahul Gandhi to continue recognising the contributions of party leaders and workers who had worked for the organisation over the past four-and-a-half years.
Warring arrived at Congress Bhawan with his supporters after an earlier gathering at a rented residence in Sector 10, Chandigarh, where he had assembled party workers before proceeding to the headquarters.
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi also addressed the gathering and described the rain as a welcome development. The presence of senior leaders, including former state Congress chiefs and prominent party functionaries, marked the occasion as the party began a new phase under Pargat Singh’s leadership.
