Chandigarh, August 27, 2026: In a major development, sources have said that the crucial meeting scheduled for today between the Punjab government and employee organisations has been cancelled. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was scheduled to hold talks with employee leaders at 1 p.m. The cancellation of the meeting is likely to further escalate the ongoing standoff between the government and the employees.
Before the meeting, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had appealed to the employees to call off their strike. He had made it clear that a strike and negotiations could not continue simultaneously.
Meanwhile, an employee leader told Babushahi that the government had conveyed to them that if the employee leaders announced through a social media video that they were ending the strike, the Chief Minister would be ready to meet them.
However, the employee leaders refused to accept the condition. They said their strike would continue and that they would not withdraw their agitation until their demands were met.
The major demands of the employee organisations include the release of pending instalments of the Dearness Allowance (DA) and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme.
Following the cancellation of the meeting, resentment among Punjab government employees has intensified. There is currently no clarity on when the next round of talks between the government and employee organisations will take place.
