Excess Water Release to Haryana; Aman Arora Terms it Daylight Robbery
Vows to Fight Tooth and Nail Against Centre Govt’s Move to Loot Punjab’s Water Resources
Punjab Calls All-Party Meeting and Special Session of State Assembly to Tackle Centre’s "Blatant Betrayal,” Says Arora
Chandigarh, May 1, 2025:
In a bold move to safeguard Punjab’s water resources, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab Government has launched an all-out battle against the BJP-led Central Government’s directive to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to release excess water to Haryana.
Terming it a "daylight robbery," AAP State President and Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora announced that the state would hold an emergency all-party meeting on Friday morning, followed by a Special Session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday, to strategize against what he described as the Centre’s "blatant betrayal" of Punjab’s rights.
Speaking to the media after a high-level meeting with Punjab's Cabinet Ministers, Arora emphasized that the state would fiercely protect its water rights and would not allow BBMB to release water beyond Haryana's rightful share. He accused the BJP of deceiving Punjab, calling this action a clear example of their true intentions.
The AAP President stated that the BJP is attempting to steal Punjab's water by allocating 4,700 cusecs of water to Haryana, which exceeds the neighbouring state's share of over 1,700 cusecs. He stressed that the AAP-led government would not tolerate such "loot" and "goondagardi" by the BJP.
Arora also highlighted the proactive stance of the Punjab government, mentioning that AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal had visited Chandigarh to assess the situation, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann visited the Nangal Bhakra Dam today to prevent the alleged water theft.
“It is high time for BJP’s Punjab unit leaders, including Sunil Jakhar, Ravneet Bittu, Tarun Chugh, and Captain Amarinder Singh, to clarify their stance—whether they stand by Punjab or are only serving their political bosses to save their chairs,” said Aman Arora. He added that if they were true sons of Punjab, they should resign from their posts to take a clear stand on this issue. He also demanded that BJP leaders immediately approach their national leaders to make it clear that Punjab has no water to spare for Haryana or any other state.
