Heavy rain likely in Punjab till Sep 17; Yellow alert issued

Chandigarh, September 13, 2026: Punjab is likely to receive heavy rainfall at some places from Sunday, September 13, through September 17, with the Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for the state. Chandigarh is also likely to witness cloudy weather and rain during this period.
The maximum temperature in Punjab fell by 0.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday but remained 1.8 degrees above normal. The highest temperature was recorded at Bhakra Dam at 36.3 degrees Celsius, while Chandigarh recorded 36.8 degrees Celsius, making it warmer than all districts of Punjab.
Rain likely in 16 districts today
According to the Meteorological Department, rain is likely at several places in 16 districts of Punjab on Sunday. Heavy rainfall is possible at isolated places in Pathankot, while light to moderate rain is expected in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and Mohali.
Rain is also likely at some places in Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala.
Punjab recorded 0.6 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The fresh spell could help reduce the rainfall deficit in several districts during the monsoon season.
Western Disturbance active over North Punjab
A Western Disturbance is currently active over North Punjab and adjoining areas. The cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan and the adjoining Jammu region is now positioned at an altitude of around 3.1 to 5.8 km over North Punjab and neighbouring areas.
The weather system is expected to increase rainfall and cloud cover across the region over the next few days.
Power demand crosses 13,000 MW
Meanwhile, rising heat and humidity have pushed up electricity demand in Punjab. The state’s power demand reached 13,083 MW at 6:30 am on Sunday.
Punjab’s own power generation stood at 4,339 MW, while 8,746 MW was being sourced from the grid. The demand is expected to rise further during the day.
