Monkey attack leaves Chandigarh woman injured; Residents raise safety concerns

Chandigarh, September 12, 2026: A woman was injured after being attacked and bitten by a monkey in Sector 22-B, Chandigarh, on Saturday, as increasing monkey activity in residential areas has raised concern among local residents.
The monkey reportedly attacked the woman and bit her at three places on her leg. She subsequently received medical treatment and injections.
According to local residents, at least four people have so far been bitten by monkeys in the city. Residents said groups of monkeys are frequently seen in houses, on rooftops and in streets, creating concern, particularly for children and elderly people.
Some residents have even placed langur cut-outs on rooftops in an attempt to keep the monkeys away. Locals said the monkeys often approach or chase people carrying food items.
Residents of Sector 22-B said temporary measures to drive the monkeys away would not resolve the problem. They urged the Municipal Corporation to identify the areas from where the monkey groups are entering residential neighbourhoods and put in place an effective system to capture and relocate them safely.
They also called for stricter monitoring to ensure that food waste and other edible items are not left in the open, which could attract monkeys.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Administration has advised residents not to feed monkeys, provoke them or block their path. The administration’s guidelines also advise people to avoid direct eye contact with monkeys and not approach their young ones.
