Safaimitras honoured; Governor announces ward-wise Swachhata challenge at MCC’s Gandhi Jayanti ‘Swachh Samman Samaroh’

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh marked Gandhi Jayanti with the Swachh Samman Samaroh at Rani Laxmi Bai Mahila Bhawan, Sector 38, celebrating the dedication of Safaimitras and key cleanliness stakeholders across the city.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, as Chief Guest, honoured Safaimitras along with representatives from resident and market welfare associations, schools, colleges, NGOs, and institutions, in the presence of Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, Chief Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar IAS, Commissioner Amit Kumar IAS, Special Commissioner Pardeep Kumar, councillors, and senior MCC officers.
Announcing a city-wide Swachhata Competition across all 35 municipal wards, the Governor declared special development grants of ₹50 lakh, ₹30 lakh, and ₹20 lakh for the top three cleanest wards to drive healthy competition and sustained cleanliness at the grassroots.
He underscored that the initiative will build accountability within communities while advancing the vision of a permanently clean and garbage-free Chandigarh, lauding the honesty and tireless service of Safaimitras as the backbone of the city’s Swachh Bharat effort.
The Governor urged collective action for a cleaner, more sustainable future, noting that the contributions of Safaimitras inspire civic responsibility and a culture of sustainability among citizens.
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla expressed appreciation to Safaimitras and all stakeholders for their sustained commitment to the cleanliness mission, acknowledging their pivotal role in ensuring a healthier urban environment.
Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar said the Swachh Samman Samaroh reflects the city’s gratitude to the champions of cleanliness, detailing activities under ‘Swachhotsav’ during the Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada, including an RRR human chain, mass Swachhata pledges, park cleanliness drives, SHG exhibitions, home composting campaigns, vendor sensitization, mega cleanliness drives, health screening for Safaimitras, cultural events, cyclothons, and plastic waste collection.
Earlier, the Chief Guest and dignitaries paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, recalling their enduring contributions to the nation.
The ceremony concluded with resounding appreciation for Safaimitras and MCC’s continued efforts toward a cleaner, greener, and healthier Chandigarh.
