Chandigarh, September 26, 2025: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Sardar Manpreet Singh Ayali has called on the Punjab government to form a dedicated committee to evaluate the recent flood damage and suggest measures to prevent similar disasters in the future. Speaking during a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Ayali stressed the need for a coordinated and proactive approach to address the crisis.
Key Recommendations:
- Repeal Section 79: Ayali urged the repeal of Section 79, which he said has hindered effective flood management.
- Construct Temporary Dams: He proposed building temporary dams within rivers to control water flow and mitigate flood risks.
- Excavate Riverbeds: Ayali recommended removing silt accumulation from riverbeds to increase water capacity and reduce overflow.
- Develop Small Canals: He suggested creating small canals to redirect excess water, enhance irrigation, and prevent crop losses.
Ayali also criticized both the state and central governments for their slow response to the floods, noting that farmers, laborers, and vulnerable communities were left without timely relief. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies and local communities to improve flood preparedness.
