Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, has clarified that renowned bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman suffered a sudden cardiac arrhythmia following a shoulder surgery, which led to his untimely death on Thursday. The statement rules out procedural complications and provides a detailed medical account of the incident.
According to the hospital’s report, Ghuman was evaluated in the OPD on October 6, 2025, for pain and restricted movement in his right shoulder. After examination, doctors advised arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with biceps tenodesis. The hospital emphasized that Ghuman had no prior comorbidities before the surgery.
The statement further mentions that the procedure, conducted under general anaesthesia on October 9, 2025, was completed successfully around 3 PM. However, at approximately 3:35 PM, the patient developed sudden cardiac arrhythmia. Despite prompt resuscitation efforts by the anaesthesia, cardiology, and critical care teams, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 5:36 PM.
“Fortis Hospital deeply regrets this unfortunate loss and extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and his numerous fans,” the official statement read.
The hospital also assured full cooperation with authorities and expressed sorrow over the loss of the 42-year-old athlete.
A Champion Remembered
Varinder Singh Ghuman, hailed as the world’s first vegetarian professional bodybuilder, was a native of Gurdaspur, Punjab. Winner of Mr. India (2009) and runner-up in Mr. Asia, he earned international acclaim for representing India in global bodybuilding competitions.
He later transitioned into films, debuting with Kabaddi Once More (2012) and appearing in Bollywood productions such as Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans (2014) and Marjaavaan (2019).
Known affectionately as Punjab’s ‘Ironman’, Ghuman inspired countless youth with his disciplined lifestyle, humility, and advocacy for fitness and vegetarianism.
His last rites were performed at Model Town Crematorium, Jalandhar, amid an emotional farewell attended by family, friends, and fans.
